I have a 15' wide mudroom that is getting a 12 pitch roof, so 7 1/2' run, 7 1/2' rise, no problem. The problem is there is a 3' overhang on one side, 6/12 pitch, same eave height. (There is an additional beam about 20" out from the wall to support the rafter tails of the lower rafters.) From my layout, this means the lower 6/12 pitch rafters will intersect the upper 12 pitch rafters about 1 1/2' from the eave of the 12 pitch roof. I hope that description works! :) The question is, what is the best way to secure the upper end of the 6/12 rafters? Side nail to upper rafters (above collar ties/ceiling joists) with a support down to the joist? or, cut and rest on top of upper rafter? Or something else I haven't thought of? Thanks!

What's up? If it doesn't make sense, I can try to describe it better. I'm a finish carpenter, not a framer!!!

Side nailing is fine. There are no large loads involved judging from your description. Use 4 3-1/2" spikes at each joint and clinch them over where the penetrate. Once you go pass a 6' span then loads become an issue. Remember the joint only supports 50% of the span. The other 50% is carried on the beam.
