We have Lousiana Pacific siding on our house that was installed in 1993. After initial chipping of paint, we applied a sealant that has prevented further moisure from creeping in and has stopped swelling and other problems. After a paint job, it looks live new.

We've been advised that, because we live in a relatively dry climate (Montana), everything should be okay and that we shouldn't have to worry about replacing it. How solid is this advice?

Thanks for your comments. Otto

Montana is not all that dry - except in the East I suppose (I grew up in Western Montana). Your siding is now 11 years old.. it may need to be replaced (or maybe it doesn't).
It is now probably more of a maintenance issue - redoing the caulking around windows/doors, etc. Checking the flashing - checking nail pops. If none of those things are an issue you are probably fine with leaving it. As soon as you see nail heads popping and flashing not doing it's job I would strongly consider replacing it.
Do you have any pictures that we can look at?
