i am very soon to start a second story addition to my house and i have ordered the lumber and windows already. my question is about the roof trusses. my house is 24 x 40 so i ordered the trusses at 4/12 on the 24 foot span side. i got the tape out today and measured the exact dimensions of the 24 foot side and it measures 24' 2". will this be a problem with a common roof truss? i just dont want to get to that point in the consruction project and have to order the trusses again without a roof over my house. thanks for any insight on this matter.

Depending on the truss style yes it could be a problem, the sloping tails may not allow it to sit down on the plate. I'd call and see if they have hit the floor yet.

well they arent suppose to be in till the 10th and delivered on the 11th. i know how to frame and all im just not familiar with everthing that is available. do you think they would be able to build these truss' to the correct 24' 2" size?

They can make them any size you want. Do like Don just said and call them. Ask them if they are made already, if they are, ask them if they will work. Ifr not, they will have to make you new trusses and charge you for the ones made already. Maybe you will loose your deposit unless you paid in full, or maybe they can use them for another job because 24' is a common size. Hope it works out for you.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking if a set of 24' trusses will work on a 24' 2" building.

The butt cut on the bottom chord is normally 1/4", with a 4/12 pitched roof your only gonna have about somewhere about 1/2" on each side to play with before the overhangs hit the plates.

As a workaround you can all ways notch the overhangs and or if the inspector won't allow notching them cut them off and scab a member onto the top chords to work.

Maybe he can get away with beveling the top plate. If there is no play he would have to come in 1" on each plate. That would only give him 2-1/2" of bearing. That might not work. If they have a 1/2" play on each side like you say, he will have 3" bearing. Maybe that will work. If he has 2x6 walls, he'll probably be in good shape.

Because the "wood butcher" framer was off from the plans, you do have a problem and need to get everything approved approved before going further. Hopefully the nail bender will stand the cost of correction if you have not already paid him.

well Matt, you have a problem, but nothing that can't be fixed, wood can be cut and managable. I would start all over, tear the walls down, take the sheathing off, start from ground zero and try again.......NOT....j/k, I know that you can order trusses any length you need, but this case you got some rather good advise already. I would cut the tails of the trusses first (if that will work), otherwise like mentioned above order the right trusses and either build a garage or sell the other 24' even trusses. I have seen this a time or two - but most of the time it is because the foundation monkeys couldn't read a tape...

I bid you good luck - keep us posted
