This is probably a silly question, but I would like to know if the rule of 16" or 24" between centers is a requirement or just a guideline? I know that 24" is the maximum that code allows - or so I'm told - but is it OK (code wise) to have 19" between centers?

I am designing a woodwork shop for my backyard which I intend to build myself. The dimensions don't really line up for 16" or 24" spacing and my sense of symmetry doesn't like having a space between the last set of studs that is not even with the rest :?

If I change the dimensions, am I going to run into other issues like the width of insulation (assuming I use any) or the size of window frames etc?

Thanks
Tony

Your sheeting won't work on a 19" center unless you are running it horizontal and then put it on 19 3/16 center and insulation won't work on 19" center without being cut. Your windows will be framed to the size you desire so no prob there.

Aaah, that is the one item I didn't really think about, the sheeting - doing woodwork as a hobby I am used to cutting everything, in framing though I can see the advantages of sticking to standard dimensions.

Out with my sense of symmetry :) Thanks!

You will find most tapes are made with a diamond at each 19.2" oc. The sheeting works at these centers if installed on it's side. Double check that that the insulation is not available, it is in some regions.

A quick note about 24" OC studs. If you use this method make sure the rafters/trusses land on top of studs.
