I would like to screen my deck in, and need some advice on the roof. In order to comply with the covenants, it must be built to match the remainder of the neighborhood. The roof will be gabled, and needs to run perpendicular to the existing gabled roof. How do I go about tying the new roof into the existing. A shed roof would obviously be easier, but I have no choice. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How much construction experience do you have? That kind of work isn't exactly for beginners. Don't get me wrong, even with limited experience, you can do it. I would try to make the tops of the screened porch walls fall in line with the top of the main house walls, so that the fascia and roof deck line up when finished. That will makes for a much easier job of tying in the shingles. I would remove as many shingles as you think will be necessary to clear the new valley you will be creating, then just nail the new ridge beam and rafters to the existing roof deck. The ends of the rafters will have a compound angle, so the use of a power miter saw would be preferable over a Skilsaw. Will the new porch ridge beam fall below the main house ridge beam? What is the width of the new porch? Do you know what pitch you want the new roof to be? What is the pitch of the existing house roof?

You will save yourself a lot of grief by using same pitch that is on the existing roof for the new porch.

Doyle,
That was a great 'condensed answer'. I didn't know how to tackle that one without writing a book. But you're right, it's not a job for the 'faint-of-heart'.
