I live in an apartment with a balcony. I want to hang some gymnastics rings from the concrete balcony of the apartment above mine...so that I can train on the rings in my balcony.

The balcony above is made from concrete and is 4 1/4" thick. The entire balcony is about 6 feet long and 12 feet wide.

I want to hang 2 rings about 2 feet apart somewhere in the center (the outermost ring should hang 2 feet from the outer edge of the balcony...and the innermost ring should hang 4 feet from the outer edge of the balcony.

What is the best way for me to do this so that I can feel reasonably safe while I'm hanging on the rings?

(Note: I do not think it is an option for me to drill all the way through the balcony and attach a bolt on the other end....because that would probably result in my above tenant calling the apt mgr's office and alerting them to what I have done.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

All concrete anchor systems are rated for pull-out capacity. I would recommend that you consult a knowledgable individual involved with fall restraint or rock climbing to find out the requirements for safety gear. The design loads for this type of equipment should give you an indication for the pull-out values you should be looking for in concrete anchors.

Better yet, get an engineer to specify the bolts. It may cost you 40-50 bucks but it might save you a broken neck too!

When you have a concrete anchor system in mind remember that they are designed to be installed a specific way. If it calls for a 7/16" hole in the concrete don't drill a 1/2" hole. If it dosen't call for additional adhesives or grouts to be added, don't add them! Here is another thread on the subject - http://www.construction-resource.com/forum/ftopic739.html

Hmm.. as mj stated - follow the specifications exactly - I would hate to see what happens on one of those "You gotta see this" shows :)

'Scary' thought, Rich, but a great 'reality check'!
