Hi. I have an older home. I believe that 2 of the bedrooms used to be one big room. In the one room the register is on the floor. The problem is, it is on the wrong side of the door. What I mean is that if you shut the door to my daughters room the vent is now in the hallway! Therefore her room gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, because basically the register isn't doing anything for her room.

Is it difficult to move this register. It is exactly on the outside of her door. a couple more inches and it would be under her door, I simply would like it on the inside of her door. Anyone know any options?

I don't plan to stay in the house but a few more years so I am not looking at anything expensive.

If the direction you want to move it is parallel with the rfloor joists, it's relatively easy. If it's perpendicular to the floor joists, it's going to cost more. They will have to cut and patch the floor if it's the easy way, and they may have to extend a duct which leads to the register If it's the hard way, they would probably have to tear down the ceiling below to cut some floor joists and install headers, and that can become a can of worms if there are pipes and wires in the way.

If you have to run ductwork crosswise under joists you can enclose it in a raceway under the ceiling. Not a bad choice if the duct runs next to a wall. It can also be an opportunity to do other things. You could make the raceway wider than needed for the duct and use the extra space to install some recessed lighting, run wires for additional outlets in upstairs rooms, or similar side projects.
