I'm building a screened porch on the back of my house. The house is built on a raised slab and my local building codes won't allow me to attach a board to the house foundation with lag bolts, so I have to build it as a freestanding porch.

My question is, is there a way for me to put the ledger right up against the house or does it have to be cantilevered on that side? If I can put it directly against the house, how do I attach it to the 6x6 posts (since that seems to prevent using a through bolt)?

Thanks for the help. I'm sure there will be more questions as I progress...

tip posts away from house, assemble and tip upright? Or notch posts and put ledger on porch side of posts. Either way note that the rims must bear on notches not just bolts thru the post.
The footings will need to be to house foundation depth alongside the house or share the hose footings if allowed.
A freestanding deck not attached to the house needs to be braced to prevent racking. I would build it on posts but still attach it to the structure for lateral stability, in fact I can make a code case for requiring it to be so. I do understand their intent to have vertical loads supported on the posts but sway bracing is a concern as well.

The AWC's DCA6 is a good free download on the deck construction;
