For a shed I am building, I am using SmartPanel, which is similar to T1-11 as my siding. Beneath that, I am using fiberboard insulative sheathing (the black stuff). Currently, I just have the fiberboard on. My question is whether in the corners of the shed I put the trim ON TOP of the siding, or if I first put the trim on, and then run the siding to the edge of the trim. IF the latter is the case, will I need to caulk/seal that somehow?

Also, I have heard about "z-flashing" the vertical joints between the siding panels. What is this, and how is this done?

Thanks!

Not familiar with 'SmartPanel', but the best way is to cut a 'recess' in the corner trim about 1/2" deep X the thickness of the 'SmartPanel' to 'recieve' it, the second-best way (and the 'easiest') is to install the panels first, then corner trim right over top of it, and the 'last' choice is to 'corner trim' first, because you'd have to caulk the joints, and the eventual 'shrinkage' would make for a sloppy looking job (and a potential water problem).

I believe wherever you heard about the Z-flashing, they meant the 'horizontal' joints. In other words, if your walls were 9' high, and you install 8' panels and a 1' strip, you would need the flashing in between to shed the rain.

I think I will use the recessed trim idea. That sounds good!

Also, I meant horizontal, not vertical. My further question is...how would I apply the flashing?

Thanks for all the help this forum has given!!!

To keep things 'waterproof', always work from the bottom up. In this case, you would install your 8' panels along the bottom first, then 'overlap' your Z-flashing along the tops (flashing gets nailed thru your fiberboard sheathing and into the studs) (keep your nailheads 'square and flush' for a neat job), then apply your 1' sheets over your 'installed' flashing. If SmartPanel has 'grooves', line them up. When you're done, no flashing nails are exposed. Hope this helps.

David, I will try to take some close-up photos tomorrow of the shed I'm currently building. They will anwers most all your questions as to SmartSide installation, Z-flashing, and corner trim.

I've installed hundreds of sheets of SmartSide (SmartPanel) and have some tips and tricks that the installation instructions don't tell you and that you probably would never even think to ask.

I will need your email address to send you some photos. I'll also give you my cell number so you can call me to ask about any more questions you may have. Can't wait to see pics of your shed when you're done.

Doyle,

Hey c'mon now, 'share' a little - - we'd like to see your photos, too. Thanks. Tom R

k...will do. But it will be next week. I emailed David earlier and told him I forgot my camera today. My next building will be started on Friday and I will be sure and document the details.
