I am in the process of residing my house up here in the Providence/Boston area and I am thinking of adding some Dow Tuff-R to the exterior to improve the insulation value of the walls. The walls are standard 2x4 construction with a plywood sheathing. I am guessing the wall insulation is R-11 (the house was built in 1975).

I am also replacing the windows with new construction windows while I am at it.

Anybody have an experience with this and/or any recommendations? I'm trying to figure out if I still have to house wrap if I'm adding 3/4" of insulation - and if I do house wrap is it over or under the insulation?

Thanks,

Jim

1/4" insulation can be bought at home depot and will help. The rating is P14. I forget what the actual R rating is. You may try 1/2" insulation if you have room. If you install the 1/2" Insulation you may need to build out the window sills so they don't appear sucked in.

Thanks grumpy. I'm going with the 1/2" Tuff-R but using 1/2" plywood to "frame" it in so I have something solid for the vinyl starter strip and top strip. I'll cover the whole thing with Typar before putting on the vinyl. The windows will get the 1/2" plywood too.

It's amazing the lengths I'll go to make myself more work! Can't wait to extend the jambs.......
