I am building a 16x32 shed roof to cover my concrete patio. I am using 4 6x6 post for the beems on the one side of the roof and attaching the other end to the second story of my house. The second floor has a 2ft over hang from the first floor. I am planning on attaching the ledger board to the second story at this spot. Do I need to be concerned about the weight of the new roof on the side of my house?????

You are planning on attaching to the fascia on the end of the overhang... no can do. If you want to attach at that level you need to get back to sitting on top of the wall.

No, you don't. You can attach the ledger to the second floor wall. Code wise you might have to lag into the existing studs.

Thanks Joe, I read it wrong.
The 2' cantilever was designed without considering the weight of the additional roof hanging from it. It is probably ok but, I'd have an arch or engineer check it for capacity before adding more weight.

I am planning a similar shed roof attached to second story wall for a proposed sunroom.

Could you provide reference for the exact clause in the code which allows attachment of ledger to second floor stud wall?

Thank You.

It should be in the neighborhood of R502.2
It's going to default to "design in accordance with the NDS"
There is a "Connections Calculator" on the awc.org website that should have lagged single shear connection values. Watch edge distances. The AWC is the folks that publish the NDS.

Where are you located? That would help people guess a little bit better. A 16" addition can pick up a lot of snow or wind uplift.

Some areas do not allow attachment to a ledger with lag screws and only though bolts are allowed, at least for decks. That is usually a local code than can always over-ride a "Model code" like the IRC because of local history.

I found a link to standard details for attaching a roof to an existing building for Ontario location.

Google "TACBOC standard details " and you should find the URL for Whitby.

"Wall Sections " provides several detail dwgs.

I guess if the details are acceptable in Tarana they should be ok in NS.
