Mom built a sunroom with Pella windows (both roof and walls) in 1988. She's long past warranty, but what is happening is two of her wall windows are experiencing severe sill rot. The company replaced one of the windows seven years ago for the same problem, but are now suggesting to her to start from square one by replacing the whole nine yards - roof and walls.

The two issues seem to be: 1) need to replace the sills, and 2) divert the water causing the rot to someplace else. A contractor friend suggested a lip of the roof where there is none - addressing #2. But the local Pella contact is saying that since they do not make this particular type of window anymore, Mom won't be happy with a "similar" replacement. Can a sill be milled to replace the current sill if we can stop the water?

Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks.

I don't see why the wood window components cannot be replaced as necessary by someone with a bit of fine woodworking experience. The process will be expensive for a few sills but cheaper than replacing the works.

You can extend the life of the remaining wood components by making sure they shed water and making sure that the mold that help start the rot is kept under control. I little bleach drizzled along the glass/wood joint were you tend to get standing water will kill any mold trying to get a foothold. The same hold true on the inside where condensation can cause the rot to start there. Use exterior sealants and finishs inside as well as out because the contain a UV sheild which will help prevent the sun from breaking down the wood fibers.

Thanks much. I thought the wood components could be milled as well. Thanks for the sealant and bleach idea as well.
