New ADA Forum

We've added a new forum that is geared towards discussions on ADA code requirements and general information in regards to accessible design and construction.

Rich:

"ADA" stand for "Americans With Disabilities Act" and only the ADA only applies to accessibility as it relates to commercial buildings in the United States....with a few exceptions.

It is a bit misleading, therefore, to use "ADA forum" for accessible design and construction of residential construction since "ADA" does not apply.

"Residential Accessibility Forum" might be a better title for a forum like this....or something along those lines...

Just a thought...

Otherwise, such a forum is a great addition to your boards...

Leave it to you to get technical on something :)

I am more in the commercial side of things and typically speak of ADA in general terms for accessibility. Point taken though, I'll change the forum name. Would like to have handicap in there, but accessibility doesn't necessarily relate to just handicapped individuals. I think I'll stick with your title, if you don't mind.

I really wasn't trying to be 'smart'...:)

Just offering support and some suggestions for possible 'fine tuning'.

I am (in my State) a 'certified' 'ACCESSIBILTY INSPECTOR'.

We use ANSI 117.1 2003 as our State standard when we design commercial (and some 'residential') buildings for 'accessible' compliance.

That said, HOW or WHEN or IF a building needs to be "ACCESSIBLE" depends upon the Code in one's jurisdiction and whether or not it applies to commercial, residential, or both type buildings.

"ADA" doesn't 'fit' most applications.

Doesn't mean 'ADA' is 'wrong'...just that it does not 'fit'.

Anyhow...do what YOU think best.

"HANDICAP"

I like 'words' and the study of 'words'.

Do you know how the term 'handicap' originated?

It comes from 'cap-in-hand'...or from those with disabilities who would have to hold out their hats to BEG for their daily bread!

Most 'handicapped' individuals before about 1960 had no access to any public buildings or public welfare and were relegated to 2nd class citizenship among us.

Which is why accessible construction is so important as a first step in making the playing field 'equal' in commercial as well as residential building...
