My problem is more with proper ventilation than with the insulation. Putting vaulted ceilings in a room makes ventilation of the roof a little more difficult (I use rafter mates), but hip roofs give me a headache. I recently put on a sunroom addition with a hip roof and fully vaulted ceilings. The soffits have continuous vent and the roof has ridge cap. The common rafters are no problem, but the only way I can see to vent the hip jacks is to drill holes (or notch) the hip rafters and also drill every jack rafter. This process works and I am comfortable that the roof is properly vented, but it also requires leaving a small void in insulation near the top of each drilled rafter. Does anyone have a better method??
