I want to cut an single floor joist to make an opening for a spiral staircase. I have the next joists doubled already. They are 2x10 and 14 feet long and 24" O.C. I want to cut a single joist 4 feet short and hang the cut end from the doubled joists via a header. Can I use a double 2x10 between the uncut joists with joist hangers..double wide hanger for the header and single wide hanger for the cut joist to do that? Or do I need a stronger header like a lvl beam? The header will span the <4ft but carry the load of the floor of approximately LL40psf and DL 20psf from the cut joist.

Trying to picture what you're saying and it sounds pretty standard practice. Can you email or post a sketch?

Here is a typical configuration for a stair opening.

Thanks for the picture...it is simple. I just needed a slap in the face to wake up...like looking everywhere for my tape measure when it is right in my hand.

I do it all the time :)
I get so many things going through my head and I by-pass the obvious.
