I had my roof replaced 7 years ago. I've had a leak from around the chimney and my roofer took a look and told me there had never been a cricket placed when the roof was built.
Shouldn't he have noticed this when he replaced my roof, and brought the "missing cricket" to my attention at that time? How much does something like this cost to repair? And, shouldn't the roofer take responsibility for it?
He should have brought it to your attention, however it 's not like he charged you for something and did not provide it. When they roofed around your chimney they should have checked the flashing and made corrections accordingly. Your roofer simply missed it, the blame lies with your original builder. Adding the cricket is relatively inexpensive. I'd ask the roofer to give me a deal on constructing it.

I was trying to think of a fair response... I think RTF got it right.
Seems like there's always blame enough to go around.

My townhouse roof is also missing a cricket in the back, where it meets the chimney, and I've started to get some leakage. A contractor looked at it last week, and he said there didn't seem to be any serious underlying damage, but he quoted me $2000 to install a new copper cricket. That seems awfully high, especially since the scope of work says "replacement of rotted / damaged framing or finishing lumber" is extra. Can someone give me a ballpark estimate for a new cricket (either metal or shingles), with all the right flashing around the roof side of the chimney? My roof is regular plywood with asphalt shingles. Only about a third of the chimney (with siding, not brick) intersects the roof and would need flashing. I live in Maryland, just north of DC.

It would probably be more meaningful to get other local bids.
