The sitch...
I am getting ready to install the final pieces of roof flashing on a shed roof (metal roof) where it meets a second story brick wall. I've had some special flashing made with a "V" bend at the top that will set into a groove cut in the brick. This was recommended as an extra measure to ensure that rain water does not enter at this joint. The house is quite old and the entire exterior was re-pointed about nine months ago. But when I cut the groove into the wall, about 1" deep, the older mortar is still present in some place and basically just crumbles away.

The part that has got me scratching my head is...
What type of adhesive/sealant should I be using to close the gap between the metal and masonry? If the old crumbly mortar is a serious issue, is there a product I can treat it with to ensure the adhesive/sealant does the job its supposed to?

Many thanks!

I use NP1, Sonneborne's polyurethane caulk to bed flashing in a reglet cut into masonry.
Actually if the old mortar is soft lime based on old brick and the new repointing is hard portland get yourself outta there before the faces of the bricks start popping off.

Word Don P.
The new mortar was made the old-skool way.
Thanks for the help.

NP1 and Sikaflex will both work, i would recommend a commercial grade silicone like Dow Corning CWS.

All polys will break down over time, due to there organic components, while a natural cure silicone will pretty much last forever due to it being non organic.

Just dont use quad that stuff isnt worth the tube the put it in...

Multi-purpose Silicone Sealant is suitable for use on glass, aluminium, painted surfaces, sanitary ware, ceramics and non-porous surfaces.
