I need to install a 1/4 mile gravel driveway on rural Ohio land. I want to dig a channel about 6" deep to hold the gravel, but I am not sure the best equipment to rent for the job. Any suggestions on equipment most effective for the job?
Thanks,
Joe
That depends on how long you have to do it. If you have unlimited time then a shovel would do.. less time would be a bobcat.. less time would be a backhoe.. less time would be some type of front end loader. Check the rental costs of each of those and see which fits best for you.

late post but a paddle scraper would be most effecient for cutting to subgrade and a motor grader would deffinatly be easyest to cut to final grade with .. it could all be done with a standard endloader if your operater skills are up to carrying a grade anyway my .02 ( i used to work road construction as an operater lol )

I'd go for a D6C with a tilt/angle blade, but that is only because that is what I'm used to. I can cut the grade, cut the ditches, and spread the excess dirt out with it.
Then use it to take gravel to grade and backblade.
a 1/4 mile would take a day, depending on the presence of rocks and soil type.
I would go with a dozer or a bobcat.
