Here's what I want to do. I want to build a little patio next to my town home. After getting some concrete quotes and pricing out a wooden deck, I decided to simply use 12x12 cement tile with a good gravel/screen/sand base. The area I'm working with is 8 feet by 10 feet. I need help calculating how much of the gravel, screen, and sand I need to buy. I would like to do 4" of gravel, 1" of screen, and 2" of sand (all compacted of course) under the tile. Any one have any ideas?

I read somewhere online that you need app. 1 ton of gravel for every 100 sg. feet (for 4" base), is this correct? If it is, are these calculation correct:
assuming 1 ton = 2,204 lbs (since my area is 80 square feet, it would 80% of 2,204)= 1,763 lbs of gravel
since I'm only doing 2" of sand, I would need 881 lbs of sand

any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The sand and gravel have different unit weights. I would figure it up by CY.

80 SF * 4" = 1 CY of Gravel.

So you would have 1/2 CY of sand.

I'm sure somewhere there is a conversion for a typical unit weight of sand and gravel if you wanted to convert it to pounds.

Here's a site I've found useful for various conversions, formulas etc.
