I was in San Francisco last year and loved it. I spent one whole day walking around the Haight/Ashbury area just taking pictures of the houses.

I was told that that your are required to leave one inch clear between the house to allow them to sway in an earthquake. Is this true?

Ive never heard of that before, but we are so overregulated out here it wouldnt surprise me. The plancheckers at the building departments require an engineer to stamp tiny changes to a structure such as replacing a window or door with a different size. One inch wouldnt make any difference in an earthquake here. Cars parked in parking lots banged together in some areas during the Loma Prieta quake in 89. I should add that common sense rarely plays a part in our regulations out here.
