1. You need to know what the soil can carry.
2. You need to know the loads in the columns.
3. You need to know the required frost depth if there is one or the minimum depth permitted if there is no frost.
Then let the engineer design the footings (size, thickness, reinforcement) and provide drawings so you can get a permit. I assume your building itself is designed for tour location. It would be best to have the same engineer design the footings.

If the building is for residential use i.e. apartments, single family house, or small commercial Use 12" thick footings with 2ft min. width for continuous footing, 3000 psi mix min. spot footings use 12"x3'x3' min
It's all guess work without knowing your loads, soil type and environmental conditions. If you have a steel design, your supplier should be able to give you your footing design/requirements. Your soil type is a major factor. Do you have a structural engineer involved? If not that needs to be your next move.
Actuly it depends on bearing capacity of your construction site soil, e.g , sandy ,clay , mix , for sandy soil foundation , b x d for 1' will be 2' x 3'
