DIY Pool Install

Has anyone installed their own pool? I'm thinking to manage the excavation and backfill myself (father in law is an ace operator). Have a fibreglass pool dropped in, then form and poor a concrete patio around the pool. I'll have the pool supplier install the plumbing and commision the thing. Any advise? Salt water vs. standard chlorinated system?

I've done a couple pool projects but have always left it to the professionals. With the fiberglass option I would think the hardest part would be getting the backfill consistent on all sides of the pool as you backfill. Probably have to compact in lifts of 12" or less all the way around, etc..etc. I'm sure the pool mfg would have suggestions on that.
