Please oh' please!!!Hey there everybody, I am new here.. I really need some general advice on how to remove a loft in order to have higher ceilings. I know I need to watch for joices (sp?) and load bearing beams, but is there anyone out there that can give me some better advice on what I may need to do to do this without destroying the house???? PLEASE!!!!???

There are several important steps to take:
1. Hire a structural engineer to review your existing conditions and what you propose to do. It is worth the $ 400-500 to get their professional opinion. He will tell you if it can or can't be done.
2. If you do it yourself shoring up the structure before you remove anything is essential.
3. Follow the directions of the structural engineer exactly, don't change what he recommends.
4. Hire a well qualified and well recommended contractor that specializes in remodeling. Don't be afraid to check their references.

Changing a structure is not ideal for a DIY project. Unless you do this kind of work everyday and understand framing and loads, my best recommendation is to leave the work to a professional.
