I am building a shed roof (lean-to for a wood shelter): there is only one slope, and there is no "ridge" per-se. At the very top part of the roof, it simply stops, there is no "other side" where I can lay shingles across onto. How do you correctly shingle the top part of this roof?

It seems that if I put down drip edge and then lay the topmost shingle on top of the drip edge, there is still a crease where water will easily flow into and get underneath the shingle. Perhaps I shingle it this way, and then lay a bead of silicon or something in the crease?

Thanks!

Put the drip-edge or a custom-bent flashing over-top the top row of shingles and down your fascia (or wall). Nail to fascia or wall rather than roof.

You can get a larger custom bend drip edge that will cover 6" or so of roofing and an inch or so down the facia board. If you want to secure this metal work down through the roof you can use some metal roofing screws with the rubber seals on them spaced about 24" OC. Rolling the edge over makes for a nice clean looking roof.

Consider a ridge vent type drip edge.

Also I have found it helpful to put ice shield in this area. A common mistake I notice is people placing under eave (soffit) vents in this area. Wind driven rain can easily be blown in.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to check out what's available for drip edge to suit.

While I'm at it, since this is a wood shed, the roof sheathing (plywood) is essentially the ceiling of the inside of the shed. I had to use 1/2" since plywood is so expensive. I wanted to use thicker so I had a better chance of getting short roofing nails that wouldn't protrude through the plywood. The shed roof is low to give the wood good weather protection, and I'm afraid the protruding nails will find there way into people's heads. Can you recommend any methods of attaching the shingles such that the fasteners don't protrude through the 1/2" plywood?

Thanks again!

Here in oregon, 1/2" roof decking is standard. I wouldn't worry about using 1/2".
Since you say your roof is low however (I've been scratched on the noggin more than afew times by nails) I'd suggest getiing a hold of a pneumatic stapler. In this case, I'd make sure the staples actually went through your decking, then simply take the time to bend them flat from underneath. Still not fool proof, but a lot better imo for your application.

Make some customer flashing.

if you are putting a 30 yr roof. you can put two layers of 30# felt and 3/4 roofing nails or staples. but these would voild any warrnty. the nails are spose to poke throught the sheeting. but its a shed roof for wood. depending on the wind in your area it should hold up just fine. glasscockroofing
