Ok here it is, im building a shed style patio cover. i want to attach the 2x8 rafters to the existing trusses in my house's gable roof. I want the shed roof to be higher than the eves so im looking to tie the rafters into the existing roof about half way up the roof, my existing roof is about a 5:12. what is the best way to tie the patio cover rafters into my roof? Ive heard 1) cut the 2x8's at the desired angle and nail into the trusses 2) nail ledger board to trusses, than rafters to ledger board....any info would help me ALOT!

I nail a ledger to the roof and nail the rafters to that. A kneewall above the exterior wall will help support the load.

thanks don, the span of the 2x8 rafters will be about 16 feet. Do you think ill need a knee wall for that distance and angle? also, would you toenail the rafters to the ledger? or do they make brackets for that application?

I toenail them in, you'll have a long rake cut. a 90 degree framing angle to ledger and rafter if you want to would be fine. I've run several pieces wide on the ledger to give full support before, the heel of that long cut is what really needs support to keep splitting forces down. I've also notched the heel so the rafter hangs over a single ledger and down to the roof.
