I've heard of people using staples to fasten asphalt shingles, but I've never seen them do it.Do you use a wider staple or like a 7/16 inch crown staple?

You want to use a 1" crown 16 gauge staple, now the length will be determined by the amount of layers of roofing and of course on overhangs you'll use a shorter staple so you don't get shiners. Hint I've actually taken a rack and snipped them for the overhangs
to avoid the costs of whole box of shorties w/you'll only use 2-3 racks for over hangs..

The type of staple gun will determine the type of staples, to make sure they fit.

Staples are fine just be sure there stapled correctly, the shingle wrapper will show the fastening line, check make sure it ok w/ city building department. Ig you're getting inspection :).

we used to put that paper on with a "slap hammer", it's a stapler only it is a long hammer type tool that spits out a staple every time you you swing it against something. super fast when you get the hang of it...hope this helps

It's funny you should post this because for the first time in about four years I was on a roof that had staples on it. In South Florida, staples were banned shortly after hurricane Andrew. This shingle roof was at least 18 years old, which is an anomaly this far south. For the small additional cost of protecting your roof, use a high quality galvanized ring shank nail instead of staples.

Yeah, in Florida staples can't be used. Nails are the way to go!

Hi Guys, I agree with you and think that staples should not be used because they can be used for tacking down just and if you want to prevent it from blow off in high wind areas then using felt nails would be great in my view.

Staples have a fraction of the holding power that nails have. Your shingles will blow off much quicker if you use them. In fact, the International Building Code states that shingles must be fastened with nails, so if inspectors see it they'll have some issues.
