I would like to move my gas water heater in order to create more finished storage space when I frame out my basement. I need to move it over approx. 10 ft. which would involve rerouting some pvc pipes, shortening the vent pipe from the heater's chimney, and replacing the flexible gas line with a longer version. Although I like to try and do things myself I have a general rule of avoiding projects which could result in my death if I screw it up. Being that I do not have any experience with gas, is this a job better left to a professional? Thanks for the input.

I would suggest letting a professional do it. Not only will they do the job they can also give pointers if your equipment needs some maintenance that you can perform yourself. Also if you are working with natural gas, lp, kerosene, etc a licensed contractor is required by most localities.

Dealing with hazardous materials such as gas is always best left to the pro's mainly for safety and liability issues.

let the pros do it and make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector.

Yup. Go to the pros. Alarm bells go off in my head when I think of 10'+ of flex line. A certified gasfitter will have to extend the gas pipe to where you need it. I've done all my own work for 20 yrs., and I absolutely will not touch gas piping. I'd disconnect and move the tank, but then call in a guy to run the gas.

I agree with tooltroll. It doesnt have to be an all or nothing proposition. Do part yourself and let a pro do the parts you cant, shouldnt do.
