Hello,

Laws just has changed in my city about maximum height of walls for a garage construction. I have already bought rough wood for structure, based on initial laws, and now would like to add about 16" to the height of my walls.

Initially, I was having walls of 9'7", using 2x6 of 8'3" (rough..)

I have think about two ways of having higher walls AND still use my 2x6x8'3".
First is putting a whole little wall on top of the first one. Advantage would be that I could decide of the height of that little wall over. But I'm afraid this would lower the strength of the structure. This is a 24x32 garage, with trusts of ~26'.

The other possibility I imagine would be to put 2 2x8 vertically to add 2 sets of 8" to the height. One above the wall, one below:

What does you guys think about those two possibilities and would there be some other ways to do it ?

Thanks for any input.

Both of these scenarios create a "hinge" in the wall. If you do decide to extend the wall add 16" vertical metal straps to both sides of the wall at every 3rd (48") wall stud location so that the "hinge" is at the midpoint of the strap. If this streatches the budget too much, just use the straps on the inside face of the wall and rely on the exterior sheathing to span the "hinge" on the other.

mjpliv, thanks for your reply.

Finally, I think the better way to go is just to find some 2x6 of 10' (or 12') rough, and keep all of the 2x6x8 for the future or try to sell.. This way it will take much less time to build, and I'm sure it will not be a lot more expensive than the two possibilities I've explained.

Syd

Sounds like a plan!
