I'm replacing the roof on a breezeway for my landlord. To put the gutter back on, I think it'd be better if I installed a fascia board, though it'd kinda mess with the design a bit. Any thoughts? Also, I plan to use roll roofing and extend it out past the roof edge about 3 quarters of an inch - enough to just dump into the gutter. Should I install the gutters first, then the drip edge over and into the gutters before I run the first course of felt?

thanks

Just be sure that there is enough pitch on the roof because if you are using roll roofing it will leak. If I were you I would install the roof and then bend a piece of coil stock to support the 3/4 of an inch roofing that will be overlapping into the gutter. So the answer to your question, the gutter should be the last thing you do.

The fact that there is open rafter tails is actually meaningless. Assuming the rafter ails are cut vertically and are not angled, the installation process is no dofferent than if there is a fascia.

When installing gutter brackets they are supposed to be secured through the fascia and into the rafter tails, like the fascia isn't even there. Why do you think gutter nails and screws are 20" long?

If the exposed rafter tails are cut on an angle you can cut them or scab on new rafters to square them off.

Because it is a flat roof I highly suggest using a gutter with integral flashing. This is sometimes called a self flashing or called a box gutter. A picture can be seen on my website at: Commercial Gutters (http://gutterexperts.com/box-commercial-gutters.htm)
