I am looking to put on an addition to my existing 1100 sq ft Cape Cod style house in Massachusetts... We are looking to add a bedroom and living room off the back of the house.......the thing is, I can't figure out what size a decent size family room is.... we currently have a 12x14 one, which is WAY too small. That is the size I would like the bedroom to be.
Any help in size or approximate cost would be greatly appreciated!

A great room in a 2000sf home is typically around 16x20 - if that gives you any guidelines.

I really depends on what your needs are.

Once you know exactly what you want to put into the room you can get an idea for layout.

Try laying out the new area on the ground with rope or extension cords. Approximate the location of all your furnishings and decide whether or not the perimeter is big enough. Adjust the size and layout until you are happy.
