A gc we do a fair ammount of work for issued us a work order last monday and says he needs 110' of 6" commercial galvanized gutter and 50' 6" galvanized downspout replaced by Wednesday. Also prime the fascia board.

The work order says HotLead! $1,200 Must be done by Wednesday.

I called him up to ask him what he was smoking, this is at very least a $3,000 job without even looking, probably closer to 4. He cops an attitude. I tell him I can't be there until thursday and to measure and it will take at least two days to fabricate the necessary gutter. More attitude.

I'm supposed to pay for his mistake? Another GC received his walking papers.

The GC is pretty much at your mercy as far as I am concerned. As soon as you get that work order it's all in your court. I've never seen or issued a work order with a price for the work before.. he must've been smoking something. IMO a work order is essentially a request for pricing. The pricing should reflect an increase as soon as they start saying we need it in 3 days. Right off the bat you might as well figure overtime in there at double time :)
I think you made the right decision Grumpy.. I'd hate to get too many of those type of work orders.

Rich, I think he knew he messed up and put the price on the work order to stick me with his mistake.

To me a work order is just that, an order to go do work and bill us when done. A rfq is a request for a price.

I forgot to mention this customer was our #1 customer but in the past months we've been considering dropping them. This was the last straw.

We have 2 different types of work orders.. I should've clarified. If we get one from an owner then we send it for pricing... others are just something we need as a GC.. where we expect it done and will pay what it is.
