I am currently working with a contractor who is installing a tumbled Limestone patio, walkway and small balcony area w/ steps off the rear of my home. the pavers are 1.3" thick and range in sizes from 8"x8" to 16"x24". They are laid in what they call a fench weave pattern. my contractor built this raised approx. 15'x8' area off the kitchen which will have three 16"Dx8"Risex6'W steps leading down to the patio. The raised area is connected to the house via lag bolts into a 2"x8" board. the boards coming out the to ends of the area are 2"x6" with a 1"x8" board running along the front. The joists are 2"x4" boards on 16" centers. All of this is pressure treated wood resting on six 4"x4" posts cemented into the ground. The flooring over this is non-pressure treated 7/16" OSB. the stones are currently adhered to the OSB w/ a product called VersaBond fortified thinset mortar. Needless to say this raised area has INCREDIBLE deflection and bounce. Can anyone tell me what this should be constructed out of.....we are meeting tomorrow morning and he claims this process of building this area is called the "Schuler System" and has a lifetime warranty.....HELP ME!

2x4 joists @ 16o.c.?? Doesn't seem like it would hold much of anything. Are the 2x4's spanning a full 8' or only 4'? I wouldn't go anything less than 2x6 with 2x10 preferrable :). That might seem quite a jump - but what happens when I have a get together and that 15'x8' area gets 20 people on it? Never heard of the Schuler System. Does he have a warranty form that states there will be no cracking of grout lines or stone? Does it state that the wood structure is guaranteed/warrantied for life? This Schuler sytem might work great for patios with no live load on it.
