I am building a home in western NY. Half of my basement is going to be used for an unheated garage. What type of insulation would be recommended for the ceiling between the floor joists? Since code requires a fire rated ceiling it will be sheet-rocked. Thanks.
R-21 Fiberglass Insulation Batts or Spray Foam. The Fiberglass you can do yourself, The Spray Foam is more expensive and someone else installs it.

True, but it's going to seriously prevent mold from growing in there, with all of the moisture he'd normally be getting in that ceiling. Pretty sure he has humidity issues in the summer in his neck of the woods in NY.

It is possible to use spray foam and do it yourself, just make sure you do your homework first and talk to a professional. As for mold, there are Anti-Microbial formulas available on the market now that are highly affective as long as there are no mold spores present pre-existing. Hope this helps.
