Default Fascia vs. Decking

I'm re-roofing a section of my (114 year old) front porch. With the old roof, the plywood decking ended at the end of the roof joists and the fascia board was nailed in front of the decking with the fascia nailed into the edge of the plywood. I think it would make more sense, however, to run the decking over top of the fascia board, with the decking nailed into the top of the fascia. I'm replacing all of the joists, decking, fascia, and soffit. Is there a "correct" way, and if so, why? If the decking overlaps the fascia, how far should it overlap?

our crew always installs the roof plywood first making a chalk line from the edge of the rafter up 46 1/2". using the chalk line as a guide we than sheath the roof. we install the fascia board after the roof sheathing is on and in doing so the roof sheathing is ontop of the fascia and the fascia will plain into the roof pitch. the gutter apron or dip edge than covers both the sheathing and the fascia. i would suggest that the fascia board be covered by the sheathing.

The roof decking should overlap the fascia - how much depends on whom you ask. Typically I'd say 1/2" to 1". The drip edge will then extend from the overlap down against the face of the fascia. It's never a good idea to place any nails into the end of plywood or OSB, nor would I ever nail the roof sheathing into the fascia. The fascia is more likely to move as the raftertruss tails flex due to loads or environmental factors (humidity, temperature, etc.) so if the two are fastened together, it would cause more harm than good.
