A/C
Air Conditioning - or specifically talking about an Air conditioning system or unit.

Access
The opposite of egress - gaining entrance to a home, room, or other enclosure.

Aerator
The screen in your faucets that mix water and air for a better flow. Can also define landscaping equipment used for potting plugs in your yard to aerate the soil.

Air Gap
Several types of air gap but most often describes the space between insulation and sheathing to allow air flow. Also between masonry and framing.

Allowance
A guess at what an item will cost in a typical structure. A (sub)contractor will give an allowance for what they would typically place into a building. The owner then has a choice of materials to go up or down depending on price.

Amortization
The method of repayment of a loan which mixes the monthly payment with interest and principal.

Anchor Bolts
Use to attach something to something else - typically used to attach pressure treated sill plate to the top of foundations.

Appraisal
The process of providing the current market value of your home through a home inspection and/or comparison with other similar properties in the same area.

APR
The Annual Percentage Rate is the amount of interest compounded monthly on a loan or mortgage.

Architect
The individual or firm that designs plans for structures and is licensed to do so by the state or governing body. Can perform several functions for the owner and/or builder.

Area Well
An opening exterior of the foundation that gives access to below grade features. Most often this refers to access to a below grade bedroom - required by code.

Astragal
A moulding, or similar material, attached to one side of a pair of side by side doors where the other door will close against.

Attic
A space above the uppermost ceiling of the home. Can be used for storage or equipment. Not all homes have an attic.
