Caisson
A drilled pier which aids in supporting foundation walls, posts, and other structures.

Cantilever
Typically refers to a floor overhanging a foundation wall. Can refer to any structural overhang.

Casement
Wood or metal frames encasing part of a window sash.

Casing
Wood (or other material) trim installed around door and window openings.

CCA
Chromated Copper Arsenate - is used for protecting wood from wood boring pests and from decay.

Cement
Portland cement is a gray powder like substance which acts as a binder in concrete.

CFM
Cubic feet per minute is the amount of air a fan can move in one minute through an opening.

Chair Rail
A wood (or similar material) trim which is installed 3-4 feet above finished floor to protect walls from being damaged by chairs and other objects.

Change order
A document which changes the scope of work of a contract. It may modify price and duration of schedule.

Chink
Chinking is used to insulate between logs and prevent air and water from entering the home. Also refers to insulating around windows and doors.

Clean out
An opening providing access to a drain line for "cleaning out" obstructions.

CMU
Concrete Masonry Unit - a hollow "brick" which is often sized 8x8x16". Comes in many different configurations for different situations.

CO
Certificate of Occupancy is issued by local building department which essentially gives an owner the ability to occupy the building on a permanent basis.

Combustion air
Fresh outside air which is strictly used for combustion type appliances - furnace, water heater, etc.

Compression
A force acting against a structural member. Think of trying to shorten a piece of wood by pushing on it.

Concrete
The conglomeration of Portland cement, sand, aggregrate, and water. When added together there is a posilonic reaction which creates heat and causes the materials to bind together and harden. Used in structural foundations, floors, sidewalks, etc.

Condensation
Water droplets that accumulate on insides of exterior wall coverings and pipes due to temperature differences.

Conductivity
The rate at which heat is transferred through a material.

Conduit
Metal pipe in which wire is ran through.

Contract
A legal document where both parties receive "consideration". Such as a contractor receives payment while the owner receives a new home.

Control joint
A tooled or cut groove in concrete structures to control cracking. The concrete will still crack - you are just controlling where it will crack.

Coped joint
Fitting woodwork to an irregular surface. Most often done with crown molding but may alse be used for base, chair rail, etc in lieu of mitering the corners.

Corbel
A decorative supporting piece of millwork which is typically triangular in general shape.

Cornice
The overhang of a pitched roof which consists of fascia, soffit, and trim.

Counterfort
An extension of a foundation wall which helps to strengthen the wall perpendicular to the longest section.

Covenants
Restrictions or standards to outline how property may be modified and used.

Cricket
An area of the roof (behind chimneys for instance) that is built up to allow water to shed around the object.

Cripple
A short piece of framing lumber installed between headers and top plates.

Curb stop
A pipe with a lid on it that is placed into the ground to allow water to be shut off by using a long pole with a special end. The valve would be at the bottom of the pipe with lid.
